NEWS:

The membership rules for the American Legion Family were changed recently, broadened to include all wars.  This resulted in changes to the Preamble of the American Legion Auxiliary Constitution.  This is recited by members at every meeting, please click here to obtain a copy.  

PROGRAMS:

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 109 Essay Contest 

The 2020 Essay Contest title is:  "How can we address the health and well-being of our veterans, military, and their families?"

The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Maryland, Inc. once again is sponsoring the Americanism Essay Contest. This contest is sponsored by Auxiliary units all over the State of Maryland and all other states

There are four classes that will be judged in Maryland:

Class I: Grades 3 & 4 (150-250 words)

Class II: Grades 5 & 6 (250-300 words)

Class III: Grades 7 & 8 (350-400 words)

Class IV: Students with Special Needs (Word count should correspond with student’s grade level)

*Students with special needs are defined as: those in special education classes, a student recommended for special education classes, but who has not been admitted due to a waiting list or various other factors, a child identified as having a disability, but not in a special education class due to lack of facilities, identification contingent upon discretion of school officials. In Maryland, a student with special needs will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Did you say prizes?  Yes!  There will be up to three winners in each class range.  At the Unit level, the winners will receive gift cards valued at $25, $50, or $75 based on their placement of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in the class range.  The 1st place winner's essay in each Grade Class will be forwarded to the Northern Central District for further judging and additional prizes will be given to the 1st - 3rd place winners at that level.  1st place winners are then forwarded to the Department of Maryland, for further judging and winners.
